Sigmund von Erlach
Sigmund von Erlach (born October 3, 1614 in Bern ; † December 7, 1699 ibid) was a general in the Old Confederation .
He came from the Bernese noble family von Erlach . He fought under his uncle Johann Ludwig von Erlach in the service of Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar and France in the Thirty Years' War , became a member of the Bernese Grand Council in 1645 and of the Small Council in 1652. In 1653 he was General of the Bernese Army in the Swiss Peasants' War and again in 1656 in the First Villmerger War . In 1667 he became Venner and in 1671 salt director. In 1673 he was a member of a Swiss delegation to Rappoltsweiler in Alsace to Louis XIV of France and was elected mayor of Bern in 1675 . He exercised this office with interruptions until he died in it.
Sigmund von Erlach died childless; the inscription of his epitaph in the castle church Spiez reads: Become - work - die .
