At the age of ten Totschnig was accepted into the Salzburg national team and in 1974 she competed in her first FIS races . After her promotion to the squad of the Austrian Ski Association , she took part in the European Cup races from the winter of 1975/76 . In her first European Cup season, sixth place in the giant slalom in Zell am See was the best result. In the 1976/77 season she celebrated her first European Cup victory in the slalom of Piancavallo and thus achieved third place in the slalom classification and even second place in the overall classification. Then she was accepted into the national team of the ÖSV and started regularly in the World Cup from the 1977/78 season . On January 19, 1978, Totschnig finished eighth in the slalom in Bad Gastein for the first time in the World Cup points and thus achieved her best ever World Cup result. Three days later she came tenth in the Maribor slalom and another three days later she was ninth in the Berchtesgaden slalom . The then 17-year-old was accepted into the team for the 1978 World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where she finished twelfth in the slalom. In the next winter Totschnig did not quite come close to the results of the previous year. In the World Cup, she never reached the points in any race and she also remained without a top position in the European Cup. In the 1979/80 season Totschnig celebrated her second victory in the European Cup in the slalom of Les Gets and at the end of the season she finished eleventh in the slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm for the fourth and last time in the World Cup points, because after the winter she gave at the age of only 19 years surprisingly announced her resignation.
