Sigwin (Cammin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigwin , also Siegwin († 1219 ), was a Roman Catholic clergyman in Pomerania , from 1191 to 1219 Bishop of Cammin .

Sigwin first appears as a deacon in Cammin in a document from 1187.

In 1191, after the death of Bishop Siegfried I , Sigwin was elected Bishop of Cammin. The choice was probably made by the Camminer cathedral chapter , founded in 1175 , to which Duke Casimir I of Pomerania had given the free choice of bishop.

During Bishop Sigwin's tenure, there were disputes over the exemption of the diocese of Cammin, i.e. its subordination directly to the Pope instead of an archbishop . It is true that Pope Clement III. the exemption confirmed. But the neighboring Archdiocese of Magdeburg and the neighboring Archdiocese of Gnesen tried to incorporate the Diocese of Cammin into their respective church province. At times they were also successful in Rome: In 1207 Pope Innocent III. Bishop Sigwin asked to obey the Gnesen archbishop Heinrich I. Kietlitz , in 1216 the same Pope demanded obedience from him to the Magdeburg archbishop. It was not until Pope Honorius III. recognized again the exemption of the diocese of Cammin.

In 1219 Pope Honorius III allowed. Bishop Sigwin to resign from office for health reasons. But Sigwin died that same year. He was buried in the Camminer Cathedral . In the same year Konrad II was elected as his successor .
