Siegfried I. (Cammin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried I , also Siegfrid I († 1191 ), was a Roman Catholic clergyman in Pomerania , from 1186 until his death Bishop of Cammin .

Siegfried was the first provost of the Camminer cathedral chapter founded in 1175 . He appears as such in several documents, for the first time in a document from 1176/1180, with which Duke Casimir I of Pomerania took the cathedral chapter under his protection, freed his property from secular rule and gave him the free choice of bishop, prelates and canons awarded based on the model of the Cologne Cathedral Chapter . The cathedral chapter was founded because Bishop Konrad I had moved the seat of the Pomeranian diocese from Wollin to Cammin in 1175 .

In 1186 Siegfried was elected Bishop of Cammin. During his tenure in 1188 Pope Clement III confirmed. the transfer of the bishopric from Wollin to Cammin and the exemption of the diocese, that is, its subordination directly to the pope instead of an archbishop . In the documents handed down, Siegfried was predominantly referred to as "Bishop of Cammin" (Caminiensis episcopus), but the older name "Bishop of Pomerania" (Pomeranorum episcopus) also appears.

Bishop Siegfried I died in 1191 and was buried in Camminer Cathedral . Sigwin was elected as his successor in the same year .
