Silver acetate is a chemical compound from the group of acetates with the constitutional formula Ag (CH 3 COO).

Extraction and presentation

Silver acetate can be obtained by reacting acetic acid with silver carbonate at 45-60 ° C.

Silver acetate crystallizes in colorless needles. The salt is not very soluble in water and, like all silver salts, is sensitive to light. It reacts with alkyl iodides to form acetate esters, as the German chemist Eduard Linnemann demonstrated in the 19th century .

use

Silver acetate creates an unpleasant metallic taste in connection with cigarettes and tobacco smoke . Therefore, an attempt was made the connection in the form of chewing gums or mouth sprays for weaning use from smoking. In studies, however, no significant effect was found and it was also found that an intake of more than 750 mg can lead to symptoms of intoxication.
