Silver gray is a name for a very light shade of gray . Despite the designation silver in the name, it is not a metallic shade.

history

As early as 1863, Pierer described silver-gray as a kind of white-gray, which is similar to silver . Depending on how close the hue is to white , Pierer differentiates between silver-white and silver-gray. Joseph Meyer describes in his large conversation dictionary how the color can be obtained from white lead and soot . Silver gray was finally adopted as a color in the RAL color fan deck created in 1927 . There it bears the designation RAL 7001 .

Color location

Silver gray is a light, gray solid color. The color dimensions of the RAL 7001 master sample were defined as follows: X 10 = 28.3; Y 10 = 30.5; Z 10 = 35.6. The following coordinates result in other color spaces commonly used today :

application

Nowadays, white lead is no longer used in paints and varnishes for the formulation of RAL 7001, but the more modern pigment titanium dioxide as the white component.

As an alloy, the color can be chemically produced as a gray tarnish of the silver by bathing the blank silver in highly diluted sulfur ammonium or from sulfur liver and a little ammonia . As gray silver , it is an alloy of silver , copper , alum , vitriol and verdigris .

In the textile industry and in botany , "silver-gray" is the color effect of bright silver on which diffuse light hits. In botany z. B. denotes the bark of the common beech and gray alder and the late buds of pussy willow . Further examples from biology are the chinchilla fur and Douglasia cinera , the latter, however, is more likely to be described as ash gray .

In dyeing , silver gray is obtained by diluting light gray .

psychology

Like all shades of gray, silver-gray is considered heavy and boring in industrial psychology and therefore has a rather dampening effect on the desire to work . In this it is similar to mouse gray . The shade is often used for cheap painting for machines.
