Silberhausen was first mentioned in 1171 as Silverhusen . The origin of the name cannot be clearly determined. There are various possible interpretations, according to which the place was either named after a feudal lord Eckehart von Silverhusen or was the settlement of a Silibaro ; A derivation from the Old High German word Silibar for silver is also possible. During the Thirty Years War the place was almost completely destroyed by Weimar troops in 1632. Due to its location on the Unstrut , the place was often affected by severe flooding. From 1756 to 1764 the Catholic Church of St. Cosmas and Damian was built in the baroque style. The place belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization in 1802 . From 1802 to 1807 the place was Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 it was part of the Prussian province of Saxony .

After tank bombardment and then unresisted American occupation on April 8, 1945, the place came to the Soviet occupation zone in July and was part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Silberhausen was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

In April 1990, master stonemason Michael Spitzenberg from Silberhausen acquired a segment of the Berlin Wall and provided it with data from the barricade of the GDR border troops around West Berlin. The monument was erected in the center of Silberhausen.

On January 1, 2019, the rural town of Dingelstädt and the communities of Silberhausen, Helmsdorf , Kreuzebra and Kefferhausen were merged to form the new rural town of Dingelstädt. The community Silberhausen belonged to the administrative community Dingelstädt .

coat of arms

Blazon : "In the silver field a blue tip, which is covered with a silver, growing tower with Renaissance gables."

The coat of arms goes back to a seal motif that was valid until 1952/53. It contains the tower and part of the west facade of the church. A folk etymological derivation of the place name is made by the tinging (silver / blue) and the heraldic image of the tip, which symbolizes the basic word "-hausen".

Attractions

  • The church of St. Cosmas and Damian was built in the Baroque style and will celebrate its 250th anniversary on October 17, 2014. The community hopes that by then the current hard cast iron bells from the 1950s (with serious sound defects) will be replaced by bronze bells. The earlier bronze bells had to be sacrificed in both world wars. The belfry also needs to be replaced.
  • Wall monument from 1990 in the town center, with an original segment of the Berlin Wall

Center of Germany

It is also worth mentioning that the center of Germany is located in Silberhausen , if one also includes the twelve-mile zone in the Baltic and North Sea when calculating the center of gravity for the FRG national territory.
