Church in Helmsdorf

history

Helmsdorf is one of the oldest places in Eichsfeld, the first documentary mention as Helmbrechtesdorff was in 1162. Without an exact date, Helmsdorf is mentioned in a document from the 9th century. A parish church is first mentioned in a document from 1283. Around 1572 there was a dispute between Duke Johann Wilhelm of Saxony and the Elector of Mainz Daniel Brendel von Homburg over the occupation of the pastorate in Helmsdorf. The city of Gotha owned the parish of Helmsdorf, which it had taken over from the Lazarite Order , and wanted to appoint a Protestant clergyman again. A large part of the residents had become Protestant after the Reformation, and there had been a Protestant pastor in the village since at least 1545. Some of the residents who were still Catholic and the Episcopal Commissariat in Heiligenstadt wanted to appoint a Catholic pastor for the church in Helmsdorf as part of the beginning of the Counter Reformation .

The current branch church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1708. In 1933–39 it was made at right angles by an extension to the north. Helmsdorf belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization in 1802 . From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . 1945 to 1949 the place belonged to the Soviet occupation zone and became part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Helmsdorf was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

On January 1, 2019, the rural town of Dingelstädt and the communities of Helmsdorf, Kefferhausen , Kreuzebra and Silberhausen were merged to form the new rural town of Dingelstädt. The community Helmsdorf belonged to the administrative community Dingelstädt .

economy

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Helmsdorf was predominantly characterized by agriculture. Another source of income, operated on a large scale, was home weaving, which reached its greatest importance around 1800. From around 1875 weaving, warp-knitting and knitting were operated on a factory basis. In the period that followed, some weaving mills were founded, the factories of which are mostly still there and are used as such. In 1963 agricultural production was taken over by an LPG .

Others

As evidence of an often coarse folk humor, neck names and nicknames that characterize each village developed centuries ago . Accordingly, the Helmsdorfer Hoinde (Helmsdorfer dogs) lived in the village . The reason is that the coat of arms of the local noble family shows a dog in stylized form, which is also depicted on some historical landmarks.
