The Silbersee is a heather pond in the Lahner Nordholz of the municipality of Lahn (Hümmling) in the district of Emsland , Lower Saxony .
description
The water, surrounded on all sides by pine forests, is almost circular and has a diameter of about 120 m. Its water level is 35 m above sea level and hardly changes during the year. The water was originally very poor in nutrients. Although the pond is relatively well protected from nutrient inputs by the surrounding forest, it now shows clear signs of the beginning of eutrophication . This indicates u. a. the occurrence of the water sword lily ( Iris pseudacorus ), which tends to be bound to nutrient-rich waters. The almost vegetation-free Silbersee is surrounded by a wreath of rushes ( Juncus effus ); further to the bank there are populations of pipe grass ( Molinia caerulea ). The former also indicates a higher nutrient content.
In the northwest corner, a birch break forest rich in peat moss ( Betuletum pubescentis ) has developed. Remnants of the original vegetation with narrow-leaved ( Eriophorum angustifolium ) and scabbard cottongrass ( Eriophorum vaginatum ) have survived in it to this day. The not too common bulky bulrush ( Juncus squarrosus ) can be found at a heavily used bank .
Animals found in the lake are u. a. Pond frogs ( Rana lessonae ) and dragonflies .
