Silver Reef is a former mining community ( ghost town ) in Washington County , Utah . It was the only mine in North America that mined silver in sandstone . The settlement was inhabited from 1875 to 1893 and in 1879 had 2000 inhabitants. A former residence is now run as a museum and temporarily as an art gallery .
