Silvia Braslavsky

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Silvia Elsa Braslavsky (born April 5, 1942 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Argentine photochemist. Braslavsky is a scientist in the field of photobiology , especially in experimental photooptoacoustics. Until her retirement in 2007, she was a professor at the Max Planck Institute for Radiation Chemistry (renamed the Max Planck Institute for Bioinorganic Chemistry in 2003 ; renamed the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in 2012 ). She was recognized for her contribution to experimental photo-optoacoustics as well as her support for international photochemical research, particularly in Argentina.

Live and act

Silvia Braslavsky is the daughter of the educational scientist Berta Perelstein de Braslavsky and the biochemist Lázaro Braslavsky and the sister of Cecilia Braslavsky , also an educational scientist and former director of the International Bureau of Education at UNESCO . She has two daughters, the sociologist Paula-Irene Villa Braslavsky and Carolina Klockow.

Braslavsky studied chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires , but left Argentina after the " night of the long batons " in September 1966. While she was an assistant at the University of Chile in Santiago de Chile , she did her doctorate at the University of Buenos Aires in 1969. After scientific Positions at Penn State University (1969–1972), at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto , Argentina (1972–1975), again Penn State (1975) and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada (1975) she went to in 1976 Max Planck Institute for Radiation Chemistry in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where she carried out research until her retirement in 2007. In the course of her research collaborations, she was a visiting scientist and professor a. a. active in Spain, Israel, Canada, Cuba, USA, Brazil and Argentina.

Braslavsky holds positions and functions in international scientific associations in chemistry . Since 2000 she has been chairwoman of the IUPAC Committee for Photochemistry. Since 2006 she has been a corresponding member of CONICET in Argentina and also a member of the scientific advisory board of INQUIMAE (Institute for Chemistry of Materials, Environment and Energy). She is currently the chair and main organizer of the 16th International Conference on Photobiology, which will take place in Cordoba , Argentina, in August 2014 . Since 2010 she has been an elected board member of the RCAA, the association of Argentinian scientists working in Germany.
