The Simon-Marius-Gymnasium is a secondary school in the Middle Franconian town of Gunzenhausen . It is the only grammar school in the city and one of three grammar schools in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district . It is named after the mathematician, astronomer and physician Simon Marius (1573-1625) from Gunzenhausen . The grammar school is based on the Latin school established in 1530 , which was replaced by a secondary school in 1893. At first it was only for boys, but since 1919 girls have also been admitted to the school. In 1960 an Abitur was taken for the first time at the school, which has been called Simon-Marius-Gymnasium since 1969. It is currently attended by around 900 students.

The school building, which was built in different phases between 1956 and 1969, was completely renovated between 1999 and 2005. In 2015 the roof of the school was badly damaged by hurricane Niklas . English , French , Spanish and Latin are offered as languages at the school . Partner schools are the West Chicago Community High in West Chicago , United States and the Lycée Auguste-Renoir in Limoges , France .
