Simon Richard Cox (born April 28, 1987 in Reading ) is an English - Irish football player who was active for the Irish national football team between 2011 and 2014 .
Player career
Reading FC and Swindon Town
Simon Cox made his debut on September 20, 2005 for Reading FC in the second round of the 2005/06 League Cup (1-0 against Luton Town). After two appearances for Reading in the Football League Championship 2005/06 , he spent the 2006/07 season mostly on loan with the third division club Brentford and Northampton Town .
On August 31, 2007, Cox moved to Swindon Town on loan and scored eight goals in nineteen third division games. After these convincing appearances, the club signed him on January 31, 2008 on a fixed contract basis. Overall, Simon Cox scored fifteen league goals in the 2007/08 season and ended the season with his team in the middle of the table. The 2008/09 season was even more successful for the 21-year-old attacker. Together with Rickie Lambert of the Bristol Rovers he was the top scorer in Football League One , both players scored 29 goals each.
West Bromwich Albion
On July 8, 2009, Simon Cox moved to West Bromwich Albion for a transfer fee of £ 1,500,000 . For the second division he scored 9 league goals in 28 games of the Football League Championship 2009/10 and rose with his new team as runner-up behind Newcastle United in the Premier League . In the 2010/11 Premier League , the 23-year-old striker (19 league games / 1 goal) was mostly only used as a substitute. After relegation in the first season of the first division, West Bromwich Albion finished the 2011/12 Premier League in tenth place with Simon Cox (18 league games), who was again only used as a substitute .
Nottingham Forest
On August 11, 2012, he signed a three-year contract with the second division Nottingham Forest .
Reading FC
In August 2014 he moved back to his hometown club Reading FC and signed a two-year contract. From October 2015 to January 2016, it was awarded to Bristol City .
Irish national team
On May 24, 2011, Simon Cox played his first international match for Ireland at the Nations Cup and scored the goal to make it 5-0 in the game against Northern Ireland. In qualifying for the European Football Championship 2012, Ireland finished second behind group winners Russia and beat Estonia 4-0 and 1-1 in the subsequent playoffs. For the first time since the European Championship in 1988, participating in a European Championship finals, Cox was appointed by national coach Giovanni Trapattoni in the Irish European Championship squad . The Cox, who was used in all three group games , retired early with his team after three defeats.
