Simon Harrap

Simon Charles Benjamin Harrap (born October 6, 1959 in Oxford ) is a British ornithologist , nature photographer , director of bird watching tours and non-fiction author .

Life

Harrap earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1983 . Since 1987 he has been leading bird watching tours on all seven continents for the ecotourism company Birdquest. Among other things, he led tour groups to the Philippines , Borneo , Malaysia , India , Nepal , Madagascar and South Africa . Harrap's scientific interests deal with the systematics of cuckoos , flycatchers and smackers , with the song, distribution and taxonomy of timalia as well as the identification and taxonomy within the genera Cettia , Bradypterus , Acrocephalus and Phylloscopus . Other fields of activity are bioacoustics and bird photography. Harraps article published a. a. in the journals Birdwatching , British Birds , Birding , Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club , Bulletin of the Oriental Bird Club and In Forktail . In 1991 he became a member of the editorial board of Birding World magazine . Harrap is a member of the American Bird Association , the African Bird Club , the Oriental Bird Club , the Ornithological Society of the Middle East and the West African Ornithological Society .

Harrap published several books on birds and wildflowers. For the work Orchids of Britain and Ireland: A Field and Site Guide (2005) by his wife Anne Harrap he contributed almost all of the photos. In 2008 he wrote the family chapters on the tail titmouse , the nuthatch and treecreeper in volume thirteenth of the Handbook of the Birds of the World .

In 2001, Harrap was among the Erstbeschreibern the Bukidnonschnepfe ( Scolopax bukidnonensis ) that is found in the Philippines.
