Simon Kristoffersen

Simon Renatus Søren Kristoffersen (born June 4, 1933 in Nuuk ; † April 21, 1990 ibid) was a Greenlandic artist .

Life

Simon Kristoffersen came from a family of artists consisting of his father Kristoffer Kristoffersen (1902–1970), his mother Dorthe Kristoffersen (née Jakobsen; 1906–1976), his sisters Sara Kristoffersen (1937–2008) and K'itura Kristoffersen (* 1939 ) and his brother Karl Kristoffersen (* 1943). Simon married Charlotte Marie Melka Ane Petrussen (1952–1990) on December 2, 1970.

Like the rest of his family, Simon Kristoffersen had received no artistic training. Only in 1967 did he briefly attend the Royal Danish Academy of Art . He worked with soapstone , driftwood and linocut . His motifs were mostly inspired by sports and games, came from mythology, such as several sculptures from the Kaassassuk saga, or depicted scenes from traditional Greenlandic everyday life, for example drum dancing or cutting up a seal. Simon Kristoffersen's Kaassaassuk sculpture in Nuuk was the first large art sculpture in Greenland. His works have been exhibited in Greenland, Denmark and Germany. In 1984 he received the Greenland Culture Prize .

Simon Kristoffersen was shot together with his wife on April 21, 1990 in their home by their oldest daughter, who was 19 at the time, with a hunting rifle. All three were drunk and after a quarrel between daughter and mother, daughter Charlotte Kristoffersen shot dead in her sleep. After Simon Kristoffersen woke up and wanted to see that everything was going well, she shot him too in shock. She was sentenced to seven years in prison in the subsequent trial.
