The New York Guardians are an American football team based in the New York metropolitan area . The team is a member of the XFL , which started in 2020, and plays its home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford , which is owned by the two New York NFL franchises New York Giants and New York Jets . The MetLife Stadium is the largest stadium in the XFL. The league publicly confirmed its desire to find a smaller stadium and mentioned the Red Bull Arena as a potential venue for 2021.

history

New York joined Dallas , Seattle , Houston , Los Angeles , St. Louis , Tampa Bay and Washington, DC as the founding cities of the League.

The team is coached by Kevin Gilbride, a longtime offensive coordinator in the NFL (most recently ten years with the New York Giants). Gilbride came out of a six year retirement to work in the XFL. His employment was announced on April 16, 2019. The name and colors of the team were published on August 21, 2019 as part of a league-wide announcement.

New York is one of two metropolitan areas that will host a team in both the original XFL in 2001 and the XFL 2020. The New York / New Jersey Hitmen were the Guardians' predecessors in the previous league. There are 16 professional sports teams in metropolitan New York, including three NHL teams, two NBA teams, two MLB teams, and two MLS teams, whose seasons overlap significantly with those of the XFL. The Guardians (although they have a New York name) market themselves as a local New Jersey franchise to stand out from the rest of the teams in the area.

2020 season

The Guardians won the first game in franchise history, defeating the Tampa Bay Vipers 23-3 at MetLife Stadium. Quarterback Matt McGloin scored the first touchdown in team history on the first drive, a 1-yard score that put them 6-0 ahead . McGloin later threw the first pass touchdown to Colby Pearson . Defenders forced three turnovers , including a fumble recovery for a touchdown from Jamar Summers . Tampa Bay reached the Redzone five times, but had to be content with a field goal thanks to an outstanding defensive performance.

The Guardians' first away game was the first time in the history of the new XFL a game to zero. The Defenders lost 27: 0 against the DC Defenders in the Audi Field . Noteworthy was a McGloin interview with Dianna Russini from ABC / ESPN , in which he criticized the team's offensive schedule. McGloin was eventually taken off the field for backup Marquise Williams for the second half.

New York's next game was a visit to The Dome at America's Center to take on the St. Louis BattleHawks. Another one-sided defeat awaited the Guardians when they lost 29: 9 in the first home game in St. Louis. McGloin was injured on the Defenders' first drive. He returned to the game but missed the entire second half. New York managed to complete a streak of 26 straight drives without a touchdown when quarterback Luis Perez found Austin Duke for an eight-yard score in the fourth quarter .

After McGloin was injured, Perez was the Guardians starting quarterback for their fourth week return to MetLife Stadium. With the help of a strong running offensive, Perez was able to lead the Guardians to a 17:14 win over the Los Angeles Wildcats. The Defenders hit 122 yards on the ground, led by Darius Victor at 82 . New York finally took the lead on a 47-yard field goal from Matthew McCrane , brought about by an interception from Summers. Jarrell Owens was the Defenders' strongest defender with two sacks and a blocked field goal.

Perez got another start when the Guardians played away again, facing the Dallas Renegades at Globe Life Park in Arlington. The Guardians had their most dominant performance of the season, beating the Renegades 30:12. New York's key to victory was 21 points in the third quarter. Williams came in for a quick one-yard touchdown before Perez tossed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Pearson, the longest pass in Guardians history. Linebacker Ryan Mueller completed that barrage by turning an interception into a touchdown, the Guardians' second defensive score of the season. New York had another excellent day in the run, reaching 144 yards on the ground. Victor went ahead again, this time with 58 yards.

The Guardians were set to take on the undefeated Houston Roughnecks at MetLife Stadium before the XFL decided to suspend their season over the 2019/20 coronavirus outbreak . New York ended its opening season 3-2 and prevailed in a three-way battle for first place in the East Division of the XFL.
