The Houston Roughnecks are an American football team based out of Houston , Texas . The team is a member of the XFL, which started in 2020, and plays its home games at TDECU Stadium , the University of Houston football stadium . The team's logo and design are based heavily on that of the former NFL team Houston Oilers (today's Tennessee Titans ), including the oil derrick in the logo and the colors red, white and dark blue. The logo also includes the letter H and the star from the Houston Astros logo, as well as the proportions of the American Athletic Conference logo with an A and a star. The second is because the Roughnecks share their stadium with the Houston Cougars and so the logo on the lawn can easily be changed.

history

Houston joined Seattle , Dallas , Los Angeles , New York , St. Louis , Tampa Bay, and Washington, DC as the founding cities of the XFL. Houston was home to several other football teams, including the Texans of the World Football League (regardless of the NFL team of the same name ), the Gamblers in the United States Football League and the ThunderBears in the Arena Football League . The city has a long history with Commissioner Oliver Luck , who played for the Houston Oilers in the National Football League and was previously president of Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer . Houston was one of the first cities to visit the league in September 2018 for a potential XFL team.

On May 13, 2019, June Jones retired from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to become Head Coach of the Roughnecks. The league confirmed this on May 20.

On February 8, 2020, the Roughnecks defeated the Los Angeles Wildcats in the second game in league history with 37:17.

The Roughnecks are rivals in the state with the Dallas Renegades. Games between the two are marketed as Texas Throwdown .
