Simone Schmiedtbauer

Simone Schmiedtbauer (born June 8, 1974 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and farmer . From 2014 to 2019 she was also mayor of the Styrian community of Hitzendorf . Schmiedtbauer stood as the top candidate of the Styrian People's Party and the Austrian Farmers' Union in the 2019 European elections and won a mandate.

Life

Schmiedtbauer grew up in Hitzendorf and graduated from the school sisters' grammar school in Graz-Eggenberg. Then she trained as a bank clerk in a Graz branch of the Volksbank . After training as a bank clerk, Schmiedtbauer became deputy branch manager of Volksbank Graz-Bruck in 1993. In 1996 she moved to Raiffeisenbank in Hitzendorf. In 2000 she left the bank and started working with her husband on their own pig farm as a farmer and as a direct marketer.

Schmiedtbauer is married and has two daughters.

politics

Schmiedtbauer came into politics in 2009 as a career changer and was elected Vice Mayor of the Styrian market town of Hitzendorf in the Graz-Umgebung district in 2010 . From 2012 to 2014 she was the chairwoman of the women's movement Hitzendorf. In 2014 she was elected mayor of Hitzendorf. In June 2015 she became the deputy of the district chairman of the People's Party Graz-Umgebung and in December of the same year district chairwoman of the farmers' union Graz-Umgebung. In May 2018 she became deputy chairman of the Styrian farmers' union. On January 18, 2019, Schmiedtbauer was presented by Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer as the top candidate of the Styrian People's Party and as the central candidate of the Austrian Farmers' Union in the 2019 European elections , after there had been rumors of a possible candidacy for Schmiedtbauer. At the end of March 2019, she resigned from her position as mayor, followed by the previous councilor, Andreas Spari.

Schmiedtbauer, like her party colleagues Lukas Mandl and Othmar Karas, came under fire in May 2019 because she was the only candidate to attend open EU discussions in schools and thus campaigned in schools. After the criticism, she canceled further appearances in schools.
