history

Admiralitätsstrasse, Hamburg, Neidlingerhaus, office and warehouse for the Singer sewing machines

Singer Sewing Machines Aktiengesellschaft , founded in 1895, emerged from the independent sales company Singer general agent Georg Neidlinger , which had been manufacturing Singer sewing machines from imported sewing machine parts at its Hamburg production site since 1860 . In Germany alone, the company soon had over 200 branches. It had the densest network of sewing machine branches in Europe and sold household and industrial sewing machines in Germany, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. In 1902 the Singer sewing machines AG in Hamburg had around 1,000 workers and employees.

In 1902 the company bought the area in Wittenberge for The Singer Manufacturing Company and after almost two years of construction, the Singer sewing machine factory in Wittenberge was opened in 1904 , another branch for the production of the American company's sewing machines in Europe.

The restrictions caused by the Second World War led in 1940 to a partial switch to the production of various armaments , from 1944 to 1945 only armaments were produced.

The production site in Wittenberge survived the war almost unscathed, but the plant was completely dismantled by the Soviet occupying forces from June 15, 1945 until 1946 as a reparation payment. The Singer factory management at the time, which was not allowed to enter the former Singer sewing machine factory, had to relocate to the former Singer branch at Bahnstraße 79 in Wittenberge . Production of Singer sewing machines could not be resumed, the former Singer sewing machine factory buildings and land remained unused for the time being, but were owned by the Singer Company and its successor companies.

The Karlsruhe sewing machine factory in Karlsruhe received a license and supply contract from Singer-Sewing Machines AG for the production of Singer sewing machines in Germany as early as 1951. The Strauss family, who lived in the USA, held the majority of the shares in the Karlsruhe sewing machine factory at that time and sold their shares in 1951/52 to the International Securities Company , which had also owned Singer-Sewing machines AG in Frankfurt since 1961 .

From 1958 the former main plant of the Karlsruhe sewing machine factory exclusively manufactured Singer sewing machines and operates under the name Singer sewing machine factory Karlsruhe . In 1965 the legal form was changed to Singer Karlsruhe GmbH and in 1967 to Singer Werke GmbH . In 1982 the Singer sewing machine production in Karlsruhe and thus in Germany was discontinued.

During the dismantling of the Singer sewing machine factory in Wittenberge by the Russian occupation forces, all records of the serial numbers of the machines actually produced in Wittenberge were lost. On the website of the Veritas Club of the Wittenberge sewing machine factory there is a compilation with an estimate of the sewing machines manufactured in these production years with the C-serial numbers as far as possible at that time. New, but not quite as extensive lists in various collector and sewing machine forums with dated, documented years of purchase show that the machines are, however, all around 10 years younger than assumed in the Veritas lists.

The machines produced in the Singer sewing machine factory in Karlsruhe bear the product name extension G. The serial numbers of these Singer sewing machines, which were identical in the early years, are preceded by the letters PA to PY .
