history

The village, first mentioned in writing in 1404, received the status of a city under Magdeburg law in 1458 , which was confirmed by the Polish King Sigismund I in 1522 . In 1450 , a castle was built to protect against attacks by the Tatars . The well-fortified settlement was one of the largest cities in Podolia in the 16th century with 1385 residents in 275 households (1578) . As the city developed economically, the population increased to 3491 inhabitants in 557 households by 1790 and at the end of the 19th century there were 4842 inhabitants in 611 households.

Between July 10, 1941 and March 27, 1944 the village was occupied by the German Reich . During the occupation , around 1,500 Jewish citizens were shot and 312 residents were deported to Germany.
