Sint-Niklaaskerk in drug bos

The Sint-Niklaaskerk is the Roman Catholic parish church of Drogenbos in Belgium .

Parish history

In the beginning, drug bos was subordinate to the parish of Ukkel . The local church was built in the middle of the 14th century.
In 1805 the village got its own pastor, and in 1825 Sint Niklaas was elevated to a parish.

In the 1950s, the cemetery surrounding the church was shut down, later permanently closed and the graves reburied.

Today the parish belongs to the dean's office in Halle in the vicariate of Flemish Brabant and Mechlin of the Archdiocese of Mechlin-Brussels .

Building history

Drawing by Ferdinand-Joseph Derons from 1737

The nave and northern sacristy date back to the 15th century, and the church was modified and expanded several times in the following centuries.

In 1855 there was a major renovation with alterations, so the main entrance at the west portal was walled up and relocated to the north side. In the course of the 20th century, the church was changed several times, for example the western entrance was reopened in the 1960s.

The church has been a listed building since 1938, and since 1945 together with the surrounding cemetery - now only preserved in the form of a small park - under ensemble protection (beschermde monumenten) .

Another comprehensive restoration and structural security are due for the next few years.

Building description

The church is in the Brabant Gothic style. It is a cruciform church with a low crossing tower and a three-aisled nave . The cross on the tower comes from the chapel of Beersel Castle .

interior

There are several late Gothic sculptures (15th and 16th centuries) in the church. The baptismal font dates from 1558, a stone holy water font dates from the 15th century. The church furniture is neo-Gothic (mid-19th century). The painting Christ on the Cross by Felix De Boeck , a local modernist painter, dates from around 1960.
