history

In 1305 the construction of the church building began, as a memorial stone still attests to today. Sint Jan was not completed until between 1421 and 1468. During the French Revolution , the beguinage was abolished, the church closed and publicly auctioned for demolition. However, the municipality managed to buy it back in 1799 and since 1803 fairs have been held there again. In 1937, Sint Jan de Doper was listed as a historical monument . Today the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is the leaseholder of the church; it uses Sint Jan de Doper as a university parish.

architecture

Sint Jan de Doper is a simple early Gothic church with some Romanesque elements, such as B. the heavy buttresses, the stair tower and the small upper windows. The nave is 9 trusses long, with 2 trusses already forming the choir . The church does not have a tower, which was typical of the mendicant orders and convents of the time, but has an elegant roof turret that has housed a carillon of 16 bronze bells that play well-known folk melodies at regular intervals throughout the day. On the east side of the church, white sandstone from Gobertange (today a sub-municipality of Jodoigne ) was used for construction, on the west side this stone alternates with iron sandstone.

inner space

The interior, which appears extraordinarily wide, is furnished in the Baroque style of the 17th century. There are about 90 tombstones of priests or beguines spread across the floor. Worth seeing is the painting "Christ on the Cross" by Pieter Jozef Verhaghen , which is located in the choir, as well as "The Holy Family" by Jan Cossiers in the right aisle.

organ

The organ was built in 1692 by the organ builder Pieter Goltfuss and has largely been preserved in its original form. The mid-tone tuned instrument has 11 registers and an effect register on a manual.
