Teemu Jyrki Juhani Sippo SCI (born May 20, 1947 in Lahti , Finland ) is a Finnish religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Helsinki .

Life

Teemu Sippo was born into a Lutheran family. In 1966 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church . On October 11, 1970, Sippo made his profession in the religious order of the Dehonians . He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1977 after studying Catholic theology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . He wrote his diploma thesis, supervised by Karl Lehmann , on "The Principle of Protestantism in Paul Tillich" . He then worked in Helsinki and Jyväskylä. In 2008 he was appointed diocesan administrator of the only Catholic diocese in Finland after the previous Bishop Józef Wróbel SCI was appointed auxiliary bishop in Lublin .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Teemu Sippo Bishop of Helsinki on June 16, 2009 . This made Sippo the first native Finn to hold the Catholic episcopate in Helsinki. The episcopal ordination donated him his former academic teacher, Bishop of Mainz Cardinal Karl Lehmann , on 5 September 2009 at the Cathedral of Turku . Co- consecrators were his predecessor Józef Wróbel SCI, auxiliary bishop in Lublin, and Czeslaw Kozon , bishop of Copenhagen . His motto is "Christ fons vitae" (Christ, source of life).

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on May 20, 2019 for health reasons.

He is the Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy Finland of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
