Sjarhej Martynau (born February 22, 1953 in Leninakan , Armenian SSR ; Russian form of name Sergei Nikolajewitsch Martynow ) is a Belarusian diplomat and politician . From 2003 to 2012 he was his country's foreign minister.

Sjarhej Martynau graduated from the Moscow State Institute for International Relations in 1975 with honors. He then worked in the Foreign Trade Relations Department in the Foreign Ministry until 1980. From 1980 to 1988 he worked as an advisor to the Soviet Foreign Minister. From 1988 to 1991 he was Deputy Head of the Department for International Organizations in the Soviet Foreign Ministry. He then worked for a year in the Mission of Belarus to the United Nations in New York and then in the Belarusian Embassy in Washington, DC , where he was appointed ambassador in 1993. In 1997 he returned to his homeland and became the first deputy foreign minister. In 2001 he went to Belgium as the Belarusian ambassador , where he was also the official representative of his country to the EU and NATO . In March 2003 he returned to Belarus, where he was appointed Foreign Minister. He held this post until August 2012, when he was replaced by Uladsimir Makej .

In addition to Russian, Martynau also speaks English, French and Swahili . He is married and has two sons.
