Skënder Bruçaj

Skënder Bruçaj (born June 22, 1976 in Malësia e Madhe County ) is an Albanian Islamic scholar and was chairman of the Muslim Community of Albania from March 2014 to 2019 .

Life

Bruçaj comes from the Albanian Alps in the north of the country. He was among the first contingent of students who traveled to Turkey in 1992 as part of a student program of the Muslim Community . In 1996 he headed the Madrasa of Beykoz in Istanbul . He later studied English at the Institute for Foreign Languages ​​at the Bosporus University and continued his studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences - Psychology branch. From 2000 to 2011 Bruçaj was the head of the postgraduate course. In 2008 he became director of the Center for Career Planning at Epoka University in Tirana . In September 2008 Bruçaj also became chairman of the drafting committee for the opening of the Muslim Bedër University in Tirana. From September 2011 to December 2013 he was Head of the Department of Justice and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Bedër University. In December 2013 he became Vice President of the Muslim Community of Albania.

In March 2014 he was elected Chairman of the Muslim Community. However, the election was fraught with controversy: some imams and other Muslim officials viewed the process as illegal because it contravened the rules of the Muslim community, and described the assignment of this office to him as a coup by the Gülen movement . In March 2019, Bujar Spahiu was elected as his successor; Bruçaj had decided not to run for a second term.

In addition to his native Albanian, Bruçaj speaks several foreign languages ​​such as Turkish , Italian and English.

He is married and has two sons.
