The city of Skiathos ( Greek Σκιάθος ( f. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ ˈskʲaθɔs ]) is the administrative seat and capital of the Greek island community of the same name, Skiathos .
Culture and history
According to the 2011 census, the city had 4,883 inhabitants, 80 percent of the island's population. Skiathos is first mentioned by Herodotus in connection with the Battle of Artemision in 480 BC. Mentioned. Sparse remnants of the ancient city have been built over since 1830 - after the end of the Turkish occupation and accession to the First Hellenic Republic . The city has two harbor basins, the old harbor being used for excursion boats and fishermen, the new harbor being reserved for car ferries . The only 18 km long and well-developed road on the island to Koukounaries runs south from Skiathos . The Skiathos Island National Airport , north of the city, connecting the island with scheduled and charter flights to European cities.
