Known residents

The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein lived in Skjolden from 1913 for several periods of life. His longest continuous stay was 13 months and important parts of his work were done here. He had a wooden house designed by himself reached here on a steep, secluded cliff above the lake Eidsvatnet in 1913; by the locals it was called "Østerrike" (Austria). It was dismantled in 1958 and rebuilt directly in Skjolden. A local Wittgenstein Foundation collected donations and acquired the original house in 2014, which was dismantled again and rebuilt at the original location from 2018; the inauguration took place there with international participation on June 20, 2019.
