Sculpture Mile (Hanover)

The sculpture mile in Hanover is a sculpture path created between 1986 and 2000 along the streets Brühlstraße and Leibnizufer in Hanover. It consists of oversized sculptures and sculptures in the public street space. The works of art are set up over a length of around 1,200 meters between Königsworther Platz and the Lower Saxony State Parliament . The very different works are mainly located on the green central island of the six-lane, busy street.

Emergence

The street art program , initiated by the then City Director Martin Neuffer , began in 1970. According to a council decision, the state capital of Hanover financed the art experiment from 1970 to 1973, in which works of art were integrated into the public street space. It started with the first old town festival in 1970 and the provisional conclusion was the installation of the " Nanas " by the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, acquired for 150,000 DM in 1974. The installation took place on Leibnizufer , where the Mike-Gehrke- Promenade runs parallel today . The start of the sculpture mile was formed in 1986 with the installation of two steel sculptures along the banks of the Leibnitz by the Hanoverian gallery owner Robert Simon . The “mile” with eight sculptures was only completed in 2000. All works of art are owned by the state capital. In 2013, the city had the 60 sculptures and objects signposted with stainless steel information boards and issued a series of information flyers listing works of art in public space created after 1945.
