Slechtvalk is a Dutch metal band with influences from folk and Viking metal as well as strong musical borrowings from symphonic black metal . Slechtvalk released her albums on the Dutch label Fear Dark and the German Whirlwind Records, among others .

history

Singer Shamgar at the Fear Dark Festival 2008

The story of Slechtvalk began with the Dutchman Shamgar, who in 1997 began to publish his own songs on the Internet under different names. In 1999 he founded the group Slechtvalk (Dutch ' peregrine falcon '). In addition to In Flames , Vardøger , Immortal and older songs by Antestor, he also names Summoning , Dimmu Borgir and Within Temptation as influences . Since the label Fear Dark expressed interest in Slechtvalk, he released the CD Falconry in 2000 about this . Falconry is primarily concerned with Christian issues and personal beliefs.

The album was a success from Shamgar's point of view and so he decided to look for more musicians to support him, including doing without the drum computer and producing the next songs with real drums. So he found the new band members Nath, Ohtar, Fionnghuala, Sorgier and Grimbold - Shamgar himself took over the guitar and the vocals. In the summer of 2002 her label produced a split CD called Chaos & Warfare , half of which was available to Slechtvalk; The Indonesian band Kekal was chosen as a partner . In October the band released the album The War That Plagues the Land .

The third album At The Dawn of War was released in mid-2005, along with a DVD ( Upon the Fields of Battle ), which u. a. contains a typical concert (including backstage report) and some photos of the group. The band continued to develop their style by becoming more guitar-heavy, but without completely deviating from their actual symphonic-melodic roots. For the single release of this album, Thunder of War , a music video was also shot, which the major music channels almost completely ignored.

In 2006 and early 2007 the band was shaken by some line-up changes. Fionnghuala left the band in mid-2006 to devote himself to other music projects, while in early 2007 the band and bassist Nath separated. On the other hand, with Seraph, another guitarist was accepted as a permanent member of the band, who took over the second guitar, while Ohtar now concentrated primarily on the vocals. On the Fear Dark Tour 2007 they played in a pure Black Metal line-up without keyboards and sequencers.

In 2009 Slechtvalk signed with the German label Whirlwind Records, where the best-of album An Era of Bloodshed was released that same year . In 2010 the new album A Forlorn Throne was released . Headliner concerts at the Elements of Rock , the Blast Of Eternity in Heilbronn and the Brainstorm Festival followed. In 2016 she released her last album Where Wandering Shadows and Mists Collide on her own.

music

From the musical side, parallels to the melodic / symphonic representatives of the Black Metal genre can be noted, but like most bands in this sector, Slechtvalk have also developed their own style.

Texts

In the lyrics, the two albums The War That Plagues the Land and At the Dawn of War deal with a story - At the Dawn of War tells the prehistory to The War That Plagues the Land - that is heavily influenced by fantasy and as a thematic pivot point fictional war . The first album Falconry , however, deals with Christian themes. Linguistically, the lyrics are mostly in English, only a few songs in other languages appear (e.g. In Paradisum in Latin or De Verdrongen Tekenen in Dutch ).

Occur

Sword art shows and the like are often presented during their live performances. In addition, they had - rather unusual for a metal band - with Meallá their own dancer and sword artist in their ranks. The band itself can often be seen at concerts in medieval -style clothing, war paint and with appropriate display weapons.
