Slime (original)

Slime (English for 'slime') is a toy from Mattel . It is green, viscous slime that was delivered in a small mini "garbage can" of the same color. Shortly after the market launch in 1976, there were other products and around 20 years later new editions - mostly with a merchandising background. Nowadays there are numerous videos to make yourself. Slime isn't usually sticky, but shouldn't get in your hair or eyes.

variants

After the first slime from the bin, various variants came onto the market. The aspect of disgust played a major role in the variants. In Slime With Worms , for example, purple slime was mixed with dark purple rubber worms. The variant Slime Eyeballs (German: Slime eyeballs ) contained eyeballs of rubber. Another theme of the original variants are movie characters. The variant Masters of the Universe Slime Pit (German: Masters of the Universe Slime Grube) (1985) consisted of a plastic device from which a kind of slime waterfall could be poured out. In the toy The Real Ghostbusters Gooper Ghosts (German: The true Ghostbusters Gooper Geister) (1987–1988), the oral cavities of various ghosts formed a container for the slime. The 1992 Attack Pack Slimenator ( Hot Wheels ) (German: Attack Slimenator Hot Wheels) is a kind of slime concrete mixer with monster teeth . Close to the original version was the Retromutagen Ooze ( Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) (German: Retro-Mutant Schleim Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) from 1993. This slime was green or purple and was packed in plastic cups. There were also turtle figures that "mutated" into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles through the slime.

New variants

Newer versions expanded the color palette to include yellow, pink, dark green, orange, ghost slime in white, black oil slime slime (original title Barrel-O-Slime ) in an oil barrel and Galaxy Slime in various colors with a metallic effect. Various objects were buried in the slime. In Slime Worms (German: Slime Worms) there were maggots, flies and spiders in the Slimy Horror version , dinosaurs in Slimy Dinosaur , garbage objects at Slimy Trashy & Smelly (German: Slimy müllig & stinkig). With Slimy Puupsi ( Simba-Dickie-Group , 2008) flatus noises can be imitated. Based on films, Harry Potter Slime Chamber (German: Harry Potter Schleim Kammer) and Masters of the Universe Mutanten-Schleimgrube (2003) were created. Other variants were Slime Oozits , Oozips , Oozlop (2002) with accessories, e.g. B. Nose with Slime or a small test tube with Slime.

Self-production

Nowadays there are numerous videos on how to make slime yourself. Among other things, borax and polyvinyl alcohol are required . Since boric acid can be harmful to health, Stiftung Warentest recommends that you do without boric acid in your own production. The consumer protection organization suggests a harmless variant based on marshmallows , flour and food coloring. The result comes close to the so-called fluffy slime.

use

toy

The purpose of the toy is primarily the tactile experience, paired with the supposed disgust factor. Handling the viscous, stretchable material can provide amusement.

Art & Media

On television, green slime in a thin consistency was used in children's programs by being poured on heads. One example is the Canadian series You can't do that on television . In a theatrical production of William Shakespeare's Winter Tale in the Hamburger Schauspielhaus in 1978, directed by Peter Zadek , several hundredweight of slime were used during the performance. Around 150,000 liters of slime were used in one scene from the film Ghostbusters II (1989). At the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards , winners in the “Hidden Talent” category are traditionally doused with green slime.

health

The boric acid contained in play slime can be harmful in large concentrations, so liquid and sticky toy materials must not release more than 300 milligrams of boron per kilogram. In a test by Stiftung Warentest, all five products examined by way of example exceeded the EU limit value, in some cases by more than three times. Italian, British and Spanish consumer organizations also examined ready-to-use slimes: 16 out of 33 released an unauthorized amount of boron.
