Smögenbron

Smögen is a place ( Tatort ) on the island of the same name in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historical province of Bohuslän in the municipality of Sotenäs .

The island of Smögen is located in the Skagerrak . It is connected to the main town of Kungshamn via the 500-meter-long Smögenbron concrete bridge , which was completed in 1970 . It originally consisted of several smaller islands that "grew together" over time. The place also consists of the parts Hasselösund and Kalvbogen, which is on the island of Hasselön, and the island of Kleven.

history

Smögen appears for the first time in 1594 under the name Smögit and in 1660 the place name Smöenn is mentioned in connection with tax contributions. On the first Swedish map, the place is then called Smöget . The name Smygesund has been found for the sound near Smögen since around 1730 .

economy

Fishermen's houses on Smögen

With its natural harbor, Smögen is one of the main transshipment points for the Swedish fishing industry. A specialty are the " Smögenräkor ", shrimp from Smögen or the fishing grounds in the Skagerrak and the North Sea that are approached from there . The annual catch is around 2.3 million tons, almost half of which consists of shrimp and the like. In addition to the food industry, tourism is an important economic pillar of Smögen. Water sports enthusiasts in particular appreciate the offers of sophisticated Smögen.

Attractions

Smögenbryggan

The Smögenbryggan is a wooden footbridge almost a kilometer long. The promenade directly at the marina meanders along the granite rocks along the harbor. There are numerous fishing and storage houses on stilts, boat sheds, restaurants, snack bars, boutiques and souvenir shops. In addition to the numerous shopping opportunities, the Smögenbryggan is the starting point for numerous boat tours to the rocky island of Hållö in front of Smögen and the location of the daily fish auctions in summer.

Another attraction is the second port, which is accessible from the west side and was last used around 1900. Right next to the harbor, whale fat was boiled and herring was processed. From the old fishing port, a channel for smaller boats carved into the rock leads to the west side of the island. This not only made it easier to transport from one side to the other, but also more water flows through the port, which is therefore always clean.
