Kungshamn is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historical province ( landskap ) Bohuslän . The place is located on a peninsula on the Swedish west coast and has been connected to Smögen by a bridge since 1970 . Kungshamn is the administrative center of the municipality of Sotenäs .

history

In the 16th century, when the first large schools of herring reached the Skagerrak , the area belonged to Norway , and the first fishermen settled in the area of what is today. However, permanent buildings were not built until the herring flood in the 18th century. The name Kungshamn first appeared on a nautical map in the 17th century and referred to an anchorage that is now between the town and Smögen. Between 1772 and 1963, Kungshamn was the name of a Christian community for the surrounding settlements. In 1900, the settlements and Gravarne Bäckevik to a united spots (Municipalsamhälle) and the place Fisketången received the same status. When the Municipalsamhallen were abolished in 1952, they were merged under the name Kungshamn, which also became the main town of the municipality.

In the 1970s, the center of the place was fundamentally redesigned. The port was partially filled, fishing barracks demolished and large houses built that now house shops.

economy

In Kungshamn is the parish hall, where all official work of the parish is carried out. Much of the population commutes to work in Lysekil and Uddevalla parishes on a daily basis , but there are also many people from these parishes who work for Kungshamn's companies.

fishing

Fishing has the longest tradition in Kungshamn and has long been the only industry in the town. In the middle of the 20th century there were more than 200 professional fishermen in Gravarne and many people were busy processing the incoming fish. In 1953, over 10 million kilograms of fish were offered at auctions . After that, the fishery declined rapidly so that today there are only a few active fishing boats left. The fish processing is still an important economic factor, since many of the companies that were founded in the 20th century, continue to exist. For example, a canning factory was opened in 1927, which later became part of the Amel Brothers corporation (better known today as Abba Seafood ). In 1954, the factory began producing Kales caviar, which is known throughout Sweden .

In 2005, Abba bought AB Hållöfisk, which had started processing shrimp and crayfish as early as 1946 .

tourism

As the fishing industry declined, the place began to focus on tourism . In the beginning, the better-off people came from Sweden's big cities, but today visitors come from all over the country and from abroad. The Norwegians form the largest group of foreign visitors, but the proportion of Danes , Germans and Dutch is also considerable. The main attraction is the proximity to the sea and many guests moor their private boat in the guest harbor . Since the landscape is mountainous, there are almost no sandy beaches. That is why many jetties have been created from which the water can be easily reached.

At times, Kungshamn was a place for young party holidaymakers, but since the local government has had less good experiences with these, families with small children are now more focused on.
