Smart as a Fox is a 1946 American short film that received an Academy Award nomination.

The film focuses on observations of a little fox, the oldest of a litter. It shows the dangers the fox cub is exposed to and how it has to cope with it when its mother is on the move in search of food. The little fox has to bravely resist the attack of a raven, just like on other days the attack of a dog. The incoming fox mother accepts her own endangerment and draws the dog's attention to herself so that he leaves the little fox alone, which means her death. The fox cub, who has withdrawn into a cave with his siblings, has to go without food for a few days, like them, until the fox father finds his children when they are almost starving and brings them food.
When the animals in the forest are threatened by a population of hunting dogs, the attacking dogs are repulsed this time by the fox father by making them run after him and then, when the danger is over, to return to his young. When the oldest little fox explores the forest, however, the dangers to which it is exposed never end, especially since it has to spend the night there alone. An owl has already glanced at him. However, he survived the night unscathed and found his way back to his family.

Gordon Hollingshead was nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Short Film" (1 film role) at the Academy Awards in 1947 with Smart as a Fox , but with this film he lost out to his second nominated film Facing Your Danger , for which he won the Oscar could take home. The winning film tells of a dangerous boat trip on the Colorado River .
