Smedeby ( German Schmedeby; earlier also: Norderschmedeby and: Danish Nørre Smedeby ) is a Danish place that belongs to the parish community ( Danish : Sogn ) Bov Sogn on the German-Danish border .
history
The place name Smedeby consists of the word component "Smede-" (or Schmede) and the ending -by and therefore obviously means " Schmiededorf ", which indicates that iron was processed on site in the past . In order to avoid confusion with Schmedeby, 30 kilometers south, the place was and is called Nørre Smedeby or Norderschmedeby, which means "northern Schmedeby". Smedeby's age is unclear. It is noted by name on a map by Franz Geerz from the middle of the 19th century. The following maps show that Smedeby was not quite as big as the neighboring village of Bau at that time, but was larger than the nearby Padborg .
The establishment of the Törsbüll – Pattburg railway line in the area probably led to an initial growth spurt at the beginning of the 20th century. Schmedeby also got a rail connection. Schmedeby came to Denmark in the course of the referendum in Schleswig (1920) and has been written in the Danish spelling Smedeby since then . As a result, customs facilities and residential buildings were built in the area. The economic trade relations in the Flensburg area changed considerably as a result of the demarcation. In 1932 the rail connection was finally closed. After the Second World War , Smedeby grew to its present size.
