Smelowka ( Russian Смеловка ) is a village (selo) in Engels Raion in Saratov Oblast with 269 inhabitants (2009).
location
The village belongs to the rural municipality Ternowskoje selskoje posselenije and is located about 3 km from the administrative seat of the municipality, the village of Ternowka , and 25 km from the center of the town of Engels in a southerly direction. It is located on the left, flat bank of the Volga , which is still in the area of the Volgograd reservoir and is a good ten kilometers wide. The Ternowka brook flows into the Volga between Ternowka and Smelowka.
The regional road R226, which has not yet been completed on all sections, passes to the east of the place and is supposed to connect Samara along the left Volga via Engels with Volschski (opposite Volgograd ).
history
The village was founded in 1842.
Yuri Gagarin landed near Smelowka on April 12, 1961 after the first manned space flight in human history ( Vostok 1 ). At the point four kilometers southeast of the place there is now a memorial complex (officially "Architectural Complex Gagarin Field ", Russian Gagarinskoje pole ).
