Smilde is a village and a former municipality in the Netherlands in the province of Drenthe , 30 kilometers south of Groningen and 9 kilometers south of Assen .
Smilde consists of the places Bovensmilde, Smilde, Hijkersmilde and Hoogersmilde. The community is located on the connecting canal, built in 1765, south-south-west of Assen . It has belonged to the administrative district of Midden-Drenthe since the municipal reform in 1998 .
There has been a transmission tower for the Dutch radio station near Smilde since 1958 . After a fire, the guyed transmission mast broke through on July 15, 2011 in the middle and collapsed.
