Localization of Drenthe in the Netherlands

The Smilde transmission tower is a 303.5 meter high hybrid tower of the Dutch radio for VHF and TV , which was completed in 1958 near Smilde .

history

The Smilde transmission tower went into operation in 1959 and was the tallest structure in the north of the Netherlands. On August 14, 1968, he was struck by a North American F-100 fighter jet and the top of the antenna mast was severely bent.

After a fire, the guyed transmission mast broke through on July 15, 2011 in the middle and collapsed. The lower reinforced concrete tower was also damaged in the collapse. All public and commercial radio and TV programs broadcast from there were canceled, and much of the north of the Netherlands was affected. Therefore, on August 4, 2011, the medium-wave transmitter Orfordness , which was shut down on March 27, 2011, was rented in order to be able to supply the affected regions with the Radio 1 program . On October 31, 2011 work began on rebuilding the station. The reconstruction was completed in mid-May 2012. In the night of September 14th to 15th, 2012 the transmission tower was put back into operation. The last station was activated on the night of September 24th to 25th, 2012.

description

Like the Gerbrandytoren, this transmission tower is designed as a hybrid tower . It consists of an 80 meter high reinforced concrete tower on which a 223.5 meter high guyed transmission mast is mounted, so that the construction has a total height of 303.5 meters. Originally this tower, which is not open to the public, was only 270 meters high.

Broadcast programs

The public and private radio and television programs for the provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe are broadcast from this tower. The range is comparatively high, so that some programs can still be received in large parts of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
