The Smith Peak is a prominent mountain on Thurston Island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . In the Walker Mountains, it rises southeast of the head end of Potaka Inlet and 10 km east-northeast of Mount Hubbard .
Its position was first determined from aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him after Dean Cullom Smith (1889-1987), pilot in the first Antarctic expedition (1928-1930) of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd .
