The Snøveg (Fv243, German  "snow road" , norw. Defined : Snøvegen ) is a 48 km long side road in Norway . The road connects the two places Aurlandsvangen in the municipality of Aurland and Lærdalsøyri in the municipality of Lærdal and leads from sea level to an altitude of 1309 m above sea level and then back down to sea level. The name refers to the large amounts of snow that lie at the highest point until summer. In winter the Snøveg is closed due to the large amount of snow. The winter closure usually lasts from mid-October to early June.

Highlands at Snøveg

The Lærdalstunnelen tunneled the Snøveg and thus represents a winter safe connection of the two places Aurlandsvangen and Lærdalsøyri safe. Today the road is mainly used as an access road for high summer pastures and as an excursion road for tourists. Directly from the village of Aurland, the road leads up over many bends and offers fantastic views of the Aurlandsfjord .

In June 2006, a few kilometers after Aurlandsvangen, the spectacular Stegastein viewpoint was opened.

The Snøveg is called Aurlandsvegen by the local population .
