background

The Love Live! Franchise was officially presented in the July 2010 issue of Dengeki G's Magazine from ASCII Media Works as a collaboration between the magazine, the music label Lantis and the animation studio Sunrise . In the following issue of the magazine, the characters and plot as well as further detailed information about the project were presented to the public.

Takahiro Yamada, who composed the song, started his musical career as a professional composer in 2009 with the song Good Smile Season , which he wrote for Atsuko Aso , and another piece, which was composed for the Lantis music label and later was the first single the title僕 ら のLIVE君 と のLIFE Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life was supposed to act for the idol group from the franchise, which was still unnamed at the time.

Shortly before the release of this first single, the September issue of Dengeki-G's-Magazin announced the release of a second single for December of the same year, which was also to be composed by Yamada. In addition, an online vote to determine the popularity between the individual members of the fictional idol group among the readers of the magazine was announced, which should determine the position of the respective member in the animated music video of the Sunrise studio. For example, the character that came first in the vote was put into the focus of the music video. So Honaka Kōsaka - spoken by Emi Nitta - was chosen in first place. In the November edition, which was sold from September 30th, the other characters, who had been kept secret until then, were officially presented. The magazine's readers were also able to vote on the name of the Idol group. In the January 2011 issue of the magazine, which was sold from November 30th, the name of the group was announced with μ's (pronounced mjuz ).

composition

An example of a halo effect: Tokyo Tower during a snow storm , 2018.

Snow Halation is a Japanese-language pop song ( J-Pop ) in which a piano , violins , acoustic and electric guitars , electric bass , drums and a bell stick are used. The piece is written in 4/4 time , moves at a tempo of 173 beats per minute and is played entirely in A major . In the intro , a piano and bells rods can be heard and it goes fast in the first stanza over. This is followed shortly after by the second stanza and the refrain . After a bridge , the scheme for the following stanzas and the chorus is retained, with only the lyrics changing. A break is used to get to the original chorus, after which a short solo by Honaka Kōsaka - voiced by Emi Nitta - can be heard as an outro . A coda is used to end the song.

Takahiro Yamada , the composer of the piece, credits the lyrics of Aki Hata and the arrangement by Ryōsuke Nakanishi to have contributed significantly to the popularity of the song. Yamada said that he liked the lyrics very much and that Hata's choice of words was consistent with the melody of the song. Yamada worked with Nakanishi as his assistant for a year and was delighted when Nakanishi told him he had been chosen to arrange the song. The lyrics describe a girl's love for someone and her inability to hold back. In doing so, she asks the listener to “accept all of her love”. The cover of the single shows all nine members of μ's in their costumes, which can be seen in the music video. The artwork was designed by Yumi Gyotoku.

Publication and reception

Snow Halation was released on CD in Japan on December 22, 2010 via Lantis . A DVD containing the six-minute music video for the song was also released with the CD . The single rose in the domestic single charts of Oricon number 74 and a total of three weeks stayed long in the rankings, in the Billboard Japan Hot 100 , the song reached number 70 its highest position.

At the beginning of 2019, Snow Halation received the special award at the Heisei Anisong Grand Prix for anime pieces that were produced between 2010 and 2019. In 2015, Snow Halation was ranked # 11 of the most popular karaoke tracks on Utasuki, which is hosted by the karaoke brand Joysound ; in August of the same year the song was listed at number one in an internal franchise ranking by Joysound. The song landed at number one on the music show Countdown Live: Anison Best 100! , which was broadcast on NHK BS Premium in February 2017.

In a meeting at LisAni! , a music magazine published by Sony Music Entertainment Japan , Snow Halation was said to create a perfect harmony between vocals and instrumentation. The singing conveys "fleeting feelings piled up like snow on a heart, from which a gentle glow emanates", whereby the lively sound of the song culminates in a brilliant climax. The use of string instruments and a piano give the piece a gentle aspect, which supports the lively sound in higher tempo passages. In contrast, according to the critic, the use of drums and electric bass convey an aggressive and lively aspect, which gives the piece a high tempo.

Junichi Tsukakoshi praised the melody, the lyrics and the instrumental arrangement in his review for Animate Times . He writes that the piece starts off calmly and gracefully thanks to its classical composition, before the song slowly builds up an intensity that reaches its climax through the use of string instruments. Another positive point of the piece is the distance between the heartbreaking passages and the song's uplifting climax. The lyricist's choice of words is said to be masterful as he has managed to keep the meaning of the lyrics simple and understandable while still trying to express the intoxicating feel of the melody.

Outside of Japan, the piece developed into an Internet phenomenon within the anime and otaku scene , which produced numerous memes in image and video form.

Music video

The music video was directed by Takahiko Kyōgoku in the Japanese animation studio Sunrise . The video starts with Honaka Kōsaka walking the streets to a shop to buy a Christmas present, the scene being interrupted by visual inserts from the other members to illustrate their expressions of feelings. The video then changes the scene to a backyard, which is lit by Christmas lights, where the nine members in groups of three perform their choreography for Snow Halation , again interrupted by image sections that show the members as they continue to prepare for Christmas . The moment the song reaches Honaka's little solo, the lights of the lighting change from white to orange , Honaka's color, and stay there for the rest of the music video.

A newly animated sequence of the music video is in the ninth episode of the second season of Love Live! See School Idol Project . This aired in Japan in June 2014. Nick Creamer named Snow Halation the best idol song in the franchise with the best choreography and best director in his review of the Blu-ray release of the second season of the television series Snow Halation . Yūko Shōji wrote in the Continue magazine of Ohta Publishing , "that the performance alone is a reason to watch the video" and "the hypnotizing expressions make it clear how much work the production team put into the video." The piece was animated again in 2018, this time with 3DCGI , to be used for the smartphone game Love Live! School Idol Festival to advertise All Stars .

Live performances

Snow Halation was played as one of the last pieces on the setlist at all six μ's concerts that took place between 2012 and 2016. When the group decided in 2020 for the first time in four years for a joint appearance as part of the franchise-wide concert Love Live! Series 9th Anniversary: Love Live! Once again firmly formed, Snow Halation was the piece that closed the concert.

During the live performances of the song, it has become established that viewers wave with white glow sticks for most of the song and switch to orange glow sticks just before the start of the last chorus in order to imitate the events from the music video. According to Yōhei Kisara, who already worked as a music producer for the franchise, this practice began at the first μ's concert and was spontaneously initiated by fans.
