Sō Yamamura ( Japanese 山村 聰 , Yamamura Sō , actually: Hirosada Koga ( 古 賀 寛 定 , Koga Hirosada ); * February 24, 1910 in Tenri ; † May 26, 2000 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese actor and film director . In his 44-year creative career, he appeared in 137 films and received 7 different awards.

Life

After Yamamura had completed his studies in German at the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1935, he joined the theater group Taiyō-za. Here he was involved in the areas of staging and dramaturgy and also gained his first experience as an actor. In 1942, the year the theater group Bunka-za was founded, he became one of the directors until he finally had to do his military service from 1944 to 1945. He made his film debut with Inochi aru kagiri in 1946. He quickly developed into a sought-after character actor who analyzed the inner workings of his characters very precisely. In the film Dai-ni no Jinsei (1948), directed by Hideo Sekigawa, he played a fisherman who campaigns for the rehabilitation of homeless children. He appeared in films by Yasujiro Ozus , Kenji Mizoguchi and Kon Ichikawa . In the production company Gendai Production, founded in 1952, Yamamura worked as a screenwriter, director, producer and as an actor for the film Kanikōsen (1953), in which the exploitation of Japanese shrimp fishermen is portrayed. From 1954 to 1965 he was head of Ginza Production. In Satsuo Yamamoto's Kizudarake no Sanga (1964), he embodied a power-obsessed and ultimately abandoned businessman. Internationally, it was featured in the Oscar-winning US-Japanese war film co-production Tora! Torah! Torah! (1970) as Admiral Yamamoto .
