The Société géologique de France (SGF), founded on March 17, 1830 , is a French non-profit geoscientific society with around 1450 members (as of 2009).

history

The company was founded by a group around Constant Prévost , including Ami Boué (1794–1881) and Jules Desnoyers (1800–1887). The founding statutes set the goals of "... to make a contribution to the advancement of the sciences of the earth and the planets, both through our own strength and through our relationships with industry, agriculture, the environment and education." At this time, geology operated in France mainly under the suzerainty of the Corps des Mines and the Académie des Sciences . In August 1830 Prévost presented the company to the new King Louis-Philippe I , who had ascended the throne after the end of the July Revolution of 1830 . He emphasized the freedom of thought and action that should be allowed to the members: "Your Highness, the sciences need freedom to flourish." This did not refer to political freedom, but to freedom from the other scientific societies of the time. This was especially true of the Académie des sciences and its president Georges Cuvier , whose fixistic ideas, which were pursued with stubbornness, hindered the study of other schools of thought, such as the ideas of Lamarck . The king granted the society non-profit status on April 3, 1832.

Society

The first board of directors consisted of Louis Cordier , André Brochant de Villiers , Alexandre Brongniart , Armand Dufrénoy , Léonce Élie de Beaumont and Henri-Marie Ducrotay de Blainville . True to the concept of scientific freedom, the members were not all Lamarckists : freedom of expression was upheld and the individuality of the members was respected. Alcide d'Orbigny , for example , a staunch catastrophist , was elected President in 1843. The society quickly became known beyond the borders of France, so that in 1850 more than a third of the members were non-French, among them Charles Darwin , Charles Lyell and Roderick Murchison .

The SGF has four specialized subdivisions: volcanology and marine sciences are pure research sections, while the section for the dissemination of earth sciences ( Géole ) also pursues scientific policy goals. The youth section is aimed at geosciences students, teachers, scholars, entrepreneurs or enthusiasts under 35 years of age. There are also four commissions.

activities

Since its inception, the SGF has published the Bulletin de la société géologique de France , and between 1833 and 1912 the Mémoires de la société géologique de France . From 1890 to 1923, paleontological works were published separately in the Mémoires de la société géologique de France / Paléontologie , only to be reintegrated into the general Mémoires . The reports of the meetings first appeared in the Bulletin , and from 1910 on they appeared in the Comptes rendus des séances , which were renamed Compte rendu sommaire des séances de la société géologique de France in 1912 and from 1972 to 1997 Bulletin de la Société Géologique de France. Compte rendu sommaire des séances de la société geologique de France . The Bulletin is still an internationally recognized geoscience series with today peer review . Further publications of the SGF are Géochronique and the reports on the Réunions des sciences de la Terre .

Every two years the society holds a congress, the “Réunion des sciences de la Terre” ( Assembly of Earth Sciences ), and holds 16 scientific meetings every year. The Portail de la géologie , a website of 15 different geoscientific associations, was administered by the SGF until 2006.

The SGF awards various science prizes, including since 1910 the Prix Gaudry named after Albert GAUDRY (1827–1908), the company's main prize.
