from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jules Pierre François Stanislaus Desnoyers (born October 8, 1800 in Nogent-le-Rotrou ; † 1887 ) was a French historian , prehistorian and geologist .

Desnoyers studied natural sciences and archeology , and in 1830 co-founded the Société géologique de France in Paris. In 1834 he became librarian at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle .

He was also secretary of the Société de l'histoire de France from its inception and member of the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques for the publication of the Documents inédits relatifs à l'histoire de France . In 1862 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .

In 1829 he introduced the term Quaternary , which referred to formations in the Loire-Touraine basin and the Languedoc that were younger than the tertiary of the Paris basin, but also included parts of the tertiary in the current sense (the introduction of the Term Quaternary therefore attributed to Adolf von Morlot 1854).
