Sofia Borges

Sofia Mesquita Borges (* 1970 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese diplomat. From 2010 to 2016 she was the Permanent Representative of East Timor to the United Nations .

Career

Borges holds degrees in anthropology , political science and law from the Australian National University in Canberra and the Northern Territory University in Darwin .

At the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 , Borges was an official electoral officer for the Australian Electoral Commission. In East Timor, which was again independent, she began to work for the East Timorese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among other things, she is co-author of a draft resolution at the 62nd General Assembly of the United Nations on a moratorium on the death penalty.

Before her appointment as Permanent Representative, she was already chargé d'affaires and worked as Vice-Chair of the Caribbean Regional Seminar 2007 in Grenada under the auspices of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization .

On March 4, 2010, she handed over her accreditation as Permanent Representative of East Timor to both United Nations to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon , replacing José Luís Guterres . During her time as a representative of East Timor, Borges was also Chairwoman of the Third Committee of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and Vice-President of the 68th session. In 2016, Boges left her post to Milena Pires , became Special Advisor on the World Association of Societies for the United Nations (WFUNA) 2030 Agenda and then began working in the office of the President of the United Nations General Assembly. At the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, she was the special advisor for strategic engagement and transparency to the session president. In 2017 Borges was Deputy Head of Cabinet of the President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

Borges is married and has one daughter.
