Helmuth Walter Ferdinand August Schmundt (born April 11, 1855 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia , † November 5, 1910 in Metz ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

He was the son of Julius Schmundt , who later became General Doctor II. Class and his wife Hermine, née Val. The later Prussian Lieutenant General Alwin Schmundt (1853–1940) was his brother.

Military career

Schmundt received his training at the preparatory school and grammar school in Herrnstadt as well as at the St. Maria Magdalena and Johannes grammar school in Breslau . Already at that time he stated the military career as a professional goal. He then joined the Silesian Fusilier Regiment No. 38 of the Prussian Army on April 1, 1874 . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on November 12, 1874, and to Second Lieutenant on October 12, 1875 . As such, Schmundt was from December 1, 1879 to September 30, 1883 adjutant of the III. Battalions in Reichenbach . He then graduated from the War Academy for three years . In the meantime promoted to Premier Lieutenant, Schmundt served as regimental adjutant from November 1, 1886 to April 8, 1889. Under position à la suite of his regiment, he was then adjutant of the 2nd Infantry Brigade in Königsberg and was transferred to the 4th Infantry Brigade in the same capacity on March 24, 1890 . Left in this command, Schmundt was transferred to the Infantry Regiment "Graf Kirchbach" (1st Lower Silesian) No. 46 on September 10, 1897 as a major . As a battalion commander he came on September 10, 1898 in the infantry regiment "von Winterfeldt" (2nd Upper Silesian) No. 23 . On April 24, 1904, he was transferred to the staff of the Metz Infantry Regiment No. 98 as a lieutenant colonel . There Schmundt was promoted to colonel on January 27, 1907 and appointed commander of the 5th Lorraine Infantry Regiment No. 144 on February 16, 1907 . On August 1, 1910, Schmundt was entrusted with the command of the 68th Infantry Brigade in Metz and on September 10, 1910, he was appointed commander of this large formation while being promoted to major general . Schmundt died shortly afterwards on November 5, 1910 while exercising his service.

He was the owner of the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with ribbon and the Order of the Crown II. Class.

Schmundt was married to Margarete, nee Fromme. The future German admiral Hubert Schmundt (1888-1984) emerged from the marriage.
