Alwin Schmundt

Alwin Hugo Ernst Gerhard Schmundt (born May 26, 1853 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ; † July 3, 1940 ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Schmundt was the son of General Doctor Julius Schmundt and his wife Germine, née Wahl. After attending grammar school in Breslau , where he obtained his Abitur, he began his military career on October 1, 1873 with the 1st Silesian Jäger Battalion No. 5 of the Prussian Army in Görlitz . In the same year he came as a second lieutenant to the 2nd Silesian Jäger Battalion No. 6 in Oels . In 1882 he was promoted to prime lieutenant. He then attended the War Academy until 1885 and then served in the East Prussian Jäger Battalion No. 1 in Ortelsburg .

In 1889 Schmundt became a captain and company commander in the Hanoverian Jäger Battalion No. 10 in Goslar . In 1897 he served as a major in the infantry regiment "von Goeben" (2nd Rheinisches) No. 28 and two years later became battalion commander. In 1901 he was appointed commander of the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Jäger Battalion No. 14 . In 1904 he rose to lieutenant colonel and on January 27, 1907 to colonel . As such, Schmundt was appointed commander of the 7th Baden Infantry Regiment No. 142 stationed in Mulhouse on March 22, 1907 . From January 27 to December 18, 1911, he commanded the 58th Infantry Brigade as major general . and was then used in the same function in the 5th Guard Infantry Brigade . On March 22, 1913, when he was promoted to lieutenant general, he was appointed commander of the 20th division in Hanover.

Schmundt led this large association after the outbreak of the First World War, initially when they invaded neutral Belgium . There he took part in the conquest of Liege and the Battle of Namur before the division advanced to France and fought in the Battle of St. Quentin . In September 1914 he gave up his division and took over command of the 19th replacement division (Royal Saxon) , with which he was deployed in trench warfare on the western front .

He had been married to Margareta, nee Mangelsdorff, since 1887.
