The ruins of the church of Sogn Murezi are on the eastern edge of the village above the village of Tumegl / Tomils in Domleschg in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Sogn Murezi is the Rhaeto-Romanic name for Saint Mauritius .

The remains of the wall of the monastery-like church were discovered in 1994 during exploratory excavations for a building project. Since then, they have been uncovered and preserved by the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Graubünden. The excavation site is covered and locked. It is included in the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Graubünden .

history

In 1398 Sogn Murezi was first mentioned as a parish church. It was probably built in the 7th century, stood until the 16th century and then fell apart. Presumably it was the mother church of the large parish in the lower Domleschg, which indicates the important position of Tumegl / Tomils in the valley.

Nothing is known about the founder or benefactor. The high-quality construction with a heating duct under the floor, which could be heated with hot smoke, could be an indication that a noble family from the Rhaetian upper class could have founded the church. A mortar inscription «DOM… PA»… could point to a paschal from the Victorid family who was bishop of Chur in the last third of the 7th century. The Victorids also founded the nearby Cazis monastery around 700 .

construction

Church of St. Peter Mistail : This is how the Carolingian church of Tomils could have looked - albeit smaller

The complex consisted of a rectangular church with a well-preserved clergy bench from the second half of the 7th century, a three-apse church built around 650 to the east and a cemetery wall from the High Middle Ages. The church has been rebuilt three times in its construction history. Around the year 1000 the entire complex was demolished and rebuilt except for the three apses of the church. It is not known why the church was abandoned during the 16th century.
