Sokolniki ( Russian Сокольники ) is a former city in Tula Oblast ( Russia ). The place had the status of a city from 1958 to 2008, until it was incorporated into the city of Novomoskowsk . Last Sokolniki had about 10,000 inhabitants.

Sokolniki is located in the northern part of the Central Russian Plate, about 80 km east of the oblast capital Tula .

Until it was incorporated into Novomoskowsk, it belonged to Novomoskowsk Rajon . Sokolniki is located about 13 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the center of Novomoskovsk. Between Novomoskovsk and Sokolniki the former city of Severo-Zadonsk after in 2005 is Donskoi was incorporated.

history

In place of a village of the same name that had existed since the 19th century, a workers' settlement was built in connection with the start of coal mining in this part of the Moscow lignite basin around 1950, which was granted city rights in 1958.

Sokolniki lost its independent city status with the entry into force of a law of the Tula Oblast of October 24, 2008, according to which the previous city area was completely transferred to the city of Novomoskowsk.

Economy and Infrastructure

After the decline of coal mining and its cessation in the 1990s, there is no industry to speak of in Sokolniki today. Part of the population is employed in the larger cities nearby, such as Novomoskovsk or Donskoy .

The place is the end point of a 16 kilometer long railway line , which starts from the station Klyuchovka in the network around Novomoskowsk / Uslowaja (suburb and freight traffic).
