Solanin ( Japanese ソ ラ ニ ン , Soranin ) is a manga in two volumes that was written and drawn by Inio Asano between 2005 and 2006. The manga was nominated for the Eisner Award in 2009 and was made live in 2010 with Aoi Miyazaki as the female lead.

Meiko and Taneda successfully completed their studies two years ago, but are still in the dark about what the further course of their lives should look like and are now confronted with the harsh reality of adulthood. You are faced with persistent boredom and everyday problems that become a test of patience. Meiko works as an office lady and Taneda as an illustrator ; Meiko's earnings make up the bulk of their livelihood. In his spare time, Taneda often meets with the members of his band from college days to make music together. Soon he realizes that he wants to play in front of more people and get known.

With increasing dissatisfaction with their current life situation and the dreary everyday life, they make decisions: Meiko quits her job and Taneda devotes his time to writing his first own piece for his band. Now they are facing an uncertain future that they want to face together.

Publications

The series was published from 2005 to 2006 in the magazine Weekly Young Sunday the publisher Shogakukan , which published the chapters in two anthologies. An English translation was published by Viz Media , a French by Kana, a Polish by Hanami and a Portuguese by L&PM.

The series was published in German by Tokyopop , Volume 1 was published in April, Volume 2 in July 2013.

reception

The US edition was nominated for the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award in 2009. In 1001 Comics , Radosław Bolałek writes that the main theme of the manga, the insecurity and forlornness of the young couple in a world in which they cannot find their place, is universal. In addition, the background offers numerous gags and allusions. With his “funny, fresh and precise dialogues” and great drawings, Solanin is worth reading.
