description

Vegetative characteristics

Solanum elvasioides is a 2 to 5 m high shrub or small tree with a slender, brittle-looking trunk . The bark is hairless and grayish, on older trunks it is pale gray. New shoots are hairless or sparsely white or reddish papillosis . The sympodial units are single-leaved or occasionally two-leaved to almost in pairs on reproductive shoots.

The leaves are simple, narrowly elliptical to lanceolate, 3.5 to 9 cm long and 0.9 to 2.5 cm wide. Both the top and bottom of the leaf are hairless. The base is pointed, the leaf margins are bent in herbarium . The tip of the leaves is pointed to pointed. From the leaf axis towards 15 to 30 pairs of leaf veins, which are close together and run parallel. They are barely visible on the upper side of the leaf, they are not protruding on the underside. The petiole is 0.2 to 0.9 mm long and slightly winged due to the leaf base that runs down.

Inflorescences

The inflorescences are opposite the leaves or occasionally arise between the nodes . They are 0.1 to 1 cm long and consist of two to six flowers . The peduncle is 0 to 0.2 mm long. Nothing is known about the shape of the flowers; the very young buds are elliptical in shape.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is a spherical berry with a diameter of 0.9 to 1 cm. It is green and hairless when ripe. The stems are 1 to 1.5 cm long on the ripe fruits, have a diameter of 0.5 mm at the base and a diameter of about 1.5 mm at the top. They are curved to slightly curved.

The seeds are 0.3 to 0.4 mm long and 0.2 to 0.3 mm wide. They are flat kidney-shaped, reddish brown and slightly paler and thickened at the edges. The seed surface is finely grained.

distribution

The species is only known from two collections from the Loja province in Ecuador . It grows there in the páramo or in shrubby vegetation at altitudes of 2600 to 2800 m.
